"Giant Leaps"

For so many days out mantra was, “small but significant improvements.” 

It’s been 52 days since Rachel’s surgery and we are grateful to report Rachel is making, “Giant Leaps!” 

Those were Dr. Effalal’s (Rachel’s neuro surgeon) exact words when describing Rachel’s progress in the last two weeks.

1. Rachel is breathing without the ventilator. (Respiratory removed the order and the machine was taken away) (She still has a “trach tube” as her primary airway)

2. All infections have healed, she is no longer on antibiotics!

3. Her muscles are getting stronger. She has been sitting in her recliner for nearly all of the daytime which continues to strengthen her core. 

4. Rachel’s courage and determination in physical therapy has everyone amazed. Nurses, techs, respiratory therapists, and even the maintenance staff that was painting door trim nearby were all cheering for her as they crowded around in her room or stood in the hall to watch with excitement as she took her first steps with assistance. 

5. There hasn’t been any more instances of hydrocephalus (Fluid in unwanted spaces or abnormal pressure) 

The mission of AdventHealth is written on the wall in the main lobby, just outside of the hallway to the Emergency Department.

This has been our families experience on the ICU floor at this hospital. 

Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for every member of Rachel’s care team, and all the kind & loving employees at we have met at AdventHealth Daytona Beach. - THANK YOU!!!

NEXT STEPS:

Mamma’s next steps will involve intense neurological specific rehabilitation. This comprehensive rehabilitation provide Rae a pathway towards her functional independence & overall well being. 

We are waiting for a response from Brooks Neurological Rehabilitation Hospital. Please pray that this approval comes quickly and her transfer happens smoothly. 

While we wait….PT, PT, PT (physical therapy)!!!
