The headline for week 6 update...The trach has been removed & Rachel is breathing trouble free!

October 25, 2023

It’s been 5 days since the Doctor removed the tube and swallowing & speaking (early stages) have drastically improved. We were told expect even greater gains.

Rachel’s mobility and muscle strength continue to increase. She is taking more steps, bearing her own weight on with her arms, and her “sit to stand” strength & balance is much improved. Each one of her primary therapists have been very encouraged as she repeatedly meets and exceeds goals.

Last week, I briefly mentioned the E-stim program for her the back of her neck and cheeks. This treatment has improved Rachel’s head control considerably. She is able to turn her head in all directions. So far today she has not needed any help keeping her head up and in a neutral position. (As the skin heals in the area where the trache was, she will be able to have electrical stimulation therapy there which will accelerate her swallowing abilities even more.)

In regards to discharge from inpatient therapy…currently it’s set for November 8th, however, another extension is possible. (We have had two such extensions). Upon discharge Rachel will be home and resume therapy through outpatient care.

There are many factors that determine the length of stay at Brooks. In simplest terms, daily improvements often translate into extensions. Her team believes she will continue her substantial progress in this context. Approval for another extension from her insurance company is an obvious part of the equation.

Our family desires the best for Rachel, and we are committed to everything it takes to support her at every stage of her recovery.  Please continue pray with us for God’s “Plan A”  over the remainder her rehabilitation. Pray for wisdom in our decision making and for the provision specific to Rachel’s needs. We are so thankful for our time at Brooks.

Lastly, as you think of Rachel these coming weeks, please pray for her emotional and spiritual strength. Communication is still limited to yes/no, and that makes it difficult to know how she is feeling on “on the inside”.

It’s easy understand how weary she can become when the entirety of her day is so physically & mentally demanding. (Imagine “working out” for three hours every day plus relearning all the basic motor functions needed to be independent!)

Thank you all,

Blessings,

Jeremy
